Generic conventions of dance movies, ideas that we can convert to comedy...Our movie research/ideas

We came up with generic conventions that we could possibly manipulate to make fun of the (dance) drama genre:

- There's a competition: the prize could be really bad, and this could be said through voice over e.g. like a years supply of energy drinks and you can stand in the background of a dance video, 'We're getting those drinks if it's the last thing we do' 'a thousand pounds... of coupons...'

- There's a conflicting point: the movie is based off bullying and later a funny mocking match at the end between the two rival dance crews 'your momma'

- They normally involve underdogs: we could use the lowest types of underdogs from each social groups: a wannabe gangsta, a geek, a posh/rich girl, quiet one (doesn't speak), enthusiastic ones

- Theres's a romance: there could between geeks

- There are dynamic camera movements: make them overly drmamtic

- There is reference to gangs and ballerinas: We could have a conventional stereotypes like talking about 'chicken and chips' and a character that has been dancing since she was 5 and is really bad

- They often strongly use stereotypes

- They bring different types of dance together e.g. ballroom dancing, hip hop, ballet: Swing dancing have them on swings, 'swing dancing... you mean on swings'
- They often use water for dramatic effect
- There is a club or disco setting
- They are normally based in schools and feature teenagers
- They often have dramatic black out flashes

The new USP- how to appeal to our at home fans...

As most of our target market are teenage students, are technologically literate and that there has been an increasing number of online piracy/ movie streaming, we must try find a way to appeal to our at home viewers as well, in order to assure that the movie gets revenue.

Through our research we have found that comedies and paraodies are not normally advertised in magazines. I then came across a new concept that Universal Pictures is piloting where three weeks after the comedy, Tower Heist's release in cinema, they are going to release it over a video on demand service called Comcast's VOD service in Portland, Oregon, Georgia and Atlanta in the US. This reflects the shortening gap between 'theatrical and home viewing windows', presenting the idea that audeiences are more drawn to the idea of staying within the comfort of their own homes and emphasising the importance of internet advertising.
This gave us the idea that we could use this to our advantage by advertising this on a magazine or possibly do multiple movie posters: one advertising the cinema release and one advertising the online release to gain a wider audeince. We could also feature this new part of cinema on a magazine puff on the magazine or have an article about it, to gain more supporters for the increasing homeviewing audience. This also exemplifys what our audience research said where most of our audience said they found out about films on the internet, this suggests we should focus most of our advertising on the internet on sites such as Youtube and social networking sites to gain a bigger audience.

As they chose a comedy to pioneer this idea, it implies there is a big audience for comedy through a mainstream audeince, despite the majority of magazine covers featuring action movies. This new idea also brings in revenue online as there is not only the possibility of income through advertising but also the viewers are urged to pay $60 to see the film this way. This may be a high initial price, but over time this may descrease and become a more popular format, regardless of the big four chains: Cinemark USA, Galaxy Theatres, Regency Theatres, Emagine Theatres and other independent cinemas, all protesting against this.

Audience Research- Questionnaire Results

From our results we found the majority of our audience is female. This implies we have to appeal to a female market by using female actresses as the main characters so that the audience can relate to them. We should also involve subjects that would appeal to the female demotgraphic by using feminine themes such as love, fashion and friendships.

The majority of our results were 15-18 years olds and so we want to make this our target audience. We will try to appeal to them by using actors that are within this age bracket so the audeicne can relate to the characters better and also feature problems or experiences that teenage girls go through during this time, such as first love, social awkwardness and school.

Our biggest result were students and when linking this with our previous result of our audience being between 15-18 this implies she they are in secondary school. This suggests we should use settings that our audeicne will be familiar with like an educational setting of a secondary school, 6th form or college. This works well for our restrictions as students as we are only allowed to film within school grounds.

The result that was the biggest is the black british, however we don't have an all black cast avaliable and so will have to try and appeal them in another way. For example, we could have a main black british character so they can relate to them, however when talking about what a black audeince will identify with, even though they will be able to relate to them because of skin colour there is a lot more to their cultural idenetities. Therefore we could appeal to them through experiences they go through or are assosiated with such as gangs and possibly make a humourous or mocking comment about that stereotype they hold. We could also play on the stereotype of having the token 'black character' in film and television and possibly play on their food, clothing style and hair issues that stereotypically arise.

As dance music and hip hop is a convention of our genre of a dance themed drama comedy , we will have to use them in our trailer. However, as the biggest result was for R&B among our audience, this implies we wil; have to use this genre to appeal to our audience as music is a big part of our appeal for the movie as well as the dancing and comedy. We could then uses this slower paced music style to possibly exagerate dramatic parts of the trailer in order to infuse an element of comedy.
The highest results was comedy implying that our audience will definatley be interested in our product. However, the other highest results were romance and actoin suggesting we will have to incorporate a romance in the story line and use many dynamic camera angles and techniques to create action pact scenes that will cause excitment in our audience. Drama was placed as one of the lowest results, implying that even though we have to include this in our trailer because it is part of our chosen genre, we should focus on the comedic element.

Most of our character results were fairly even such as the hero and comedic fool being of equal weight and the bad boy and enthusiast coming second. Instead of featuring just one main actor, we could have multiple main characters in order to utilise all the differe types of characters people relate to most. however, our central character will have to be either a hero or comedic fool, or could have an element of both. This all emphasises the importance we have to plae on our character concepts and design.

Most of our results said people are attracted to posters because of the actors on display. This suggests we need to pay a lot of attention on the asthetics and look of the characters we film, so that the audience will be attracted to our entire promotional package of a poster, trailer and magazine cover.

product research

plan

watch different dance inspired dramas & comedies- films & trailers
find common conventions within these films and trailers that we can incorporate into our own product

films to watch:
dance flick- spoof
drama- look at street dance because British, take the lead- features more then one person honey- about competetion so could be quite useful
comedy- mean girls?- teen drama/ comedy

Treatment

Treatment

Suprise suprise, another dance crew rules the school. And with every dominant dance crew there's is a group of underdogs who decide to rebel. After being provoked, 'underdog number 1' decides to stick up for herself (where usually she would shy into the background) because she is sick of the bullying and desides to enter herself and a bunch of uncoordinated nobodies into a dance competition to show up the (much better) dance crew.
It will be a parody

Character Ideas

Group of friends- stereotypical groups

"the rich one"- Madalen?
"the fool"- Rianna?
"the shy one"- Nicola?
"the nerd" - Chloe?
"the Heroine"- on popular demand because of the survey we did- the popular preference was the hero/ heroine - Emily?
(thought about archetypes you will see in teen comedies/ dramas)

The dance crew

"the leader"- Maria?
and extras- 5 to 6 more people??

Audience Research

For our audience research we have decided to give out surveys.

We decided to ask questions such as "What genre of music do you prefer" so we can prehaps incorporate the results of this question into out trailer.

We have decided to focus on the question:
What is your favourite genre of music?
What is your favourite genre of film?
What character is your preference?
what draws you to a poster?

Once we have colliated all the data we will makes graphs and that decided to incorporate certain aspects of our results into our product.
